#969/970 ‘UNDER 9.5’ Oakland Athletics (Mengden) at Detroit Tigers (Boyd) 3:10 PM CT

Pitching for the Tigers Matthew Boyd isn’t getting a lot of attention but he has had an All Star caliber run in his first nine starts with a 3.15 ERA and a 10.8 K/9. He has now allowed more than three earned runs in any of his starts this season and his 2.86 FIP suggests it is a sustainable pace for the 28-year-old who has shown potential but inconsistency in past seasons. Oakland is the last place team in the AL West a year after making the playoffs and while Oakland has hit significantly better vs. left-handers they are batting with a .712 team OPS the past 23 games for marginal production.

That production bests the Tigers potential with Detroit’s lineup among the league’s worst in most offensive categories. The Tigers have the second highest strikeout rate in baseball while offering a very low walk rate and the second fewest home runs in MLB. That bodes well for Daniel Mengden in his second start of the season after posting great AAA numbers. Mengden was a useful starter for Oakland last year and while he allowed four runs in his 2019 debut he surrendered only five hits.

Detroit has not topped five runs in 10 straight games to average just 2.4 runs per game. Oakland has posted 24 runs in the first two games of this series but the 17-run showing on Thursday featured only 16 hits and five unearned runs while these teams scored nine runs on only 13 hits last night. The weather in Detroit this afternoon should also favor pitching with cooler temperatures and the wind blowing win fairly strong from left-center.

Bobby Dalton has a big 4-play card in MLB Saturday as he looks for a third straight winning week while 3-1 in his last four Best Bets. Nelly’s MLB is 6-3 since Monday and we have a guaranteed afternoon total.

Bobby Dalton is 4-1 in the Conference Finals and is featuring a Game 3 side & total package in the NBA Saturday. Nelly’s is 2-0 in the Conference Finals and 10-6 in our last 16 playoff sides – don’t miss our Game 3 pick.

#724 Northern Kentucky -9.5 over Oakland 6:00 PM CT

Northern Kentucky has a one-game lead over Wright State in the Horizon standings with Oakland two games back. This is a critical home game for the Norse after losing by two at Oakland in early January and knowing they head to Dayton next Friday. Northern Kentucky is 6-0 at home in Horizon play and 14-0 at home on the season. The average margin of victory for the Norse has been 17 points at home in league play while Oakland is drawing a second straight road game after a double-digit loss at Wright State on Thursday night.

[displayProduct type=”carousel” sort=”nameaz” productnamecolor=”#ffffff” pricecolor=”#ffffff” textcolor=”#ffffff” carousel=image,title,price,button,excerpt]

Oakland actually led that game early before getting outscored by 20 points in the second half and a highly vulnerable Grizzlies defense will face the top Horizon offense in this contest. Northern Kentucky also features the top 3-point shooting numbers on both offense and defense in Horizon play and Oakland has been turnover prone this season. After losing the past two meetings in this series including losing in Highland Heights last season in this matchup this is a huge game on the schedule for the host. Seven Northern Kentucky conference wins have come by 15 or more points and the Norse are capable of pouring it on against one of the worst defensive teams in the nation.

#970 Minnesota Twins (Odorizzi) +120 over Oakland Athletics (Manaea) 7:10 PM CT

The Twins have been a disappointment this season but Minnesota has played respectable ball in the past two months even as one of the big trade deadline sellers. The Twins have a .784 team OPS in the past 12 games with 21 home runs and 5.5 runs per game on average. Minnesota won the season’s first meeting with Oakland last night and Minnesota could play spoiler with six more games remaining against the Athletics. Since early July Minnesota is 26-18 while scoring 5.1 runs per game and the Twins are 39-26 at Target Field on the season.

[displayProduct type=”carousel” sort=”newness” productnamecolor=”#ffffff” pricecolor=”#ffffff” textcolor=”#ffffff” carousel=image,title,price,button,excerpt]

The season numbers support a preference for facing right-handers for Minnesota but in the past 10 games the Twins have hit .260 with 7.6 runs per nine vs. southpaw pitching. Sean Manaea has a nice season line with a 3.70 ERA but take out a brilliant month of April and he is a league-average pitcher with a 4.74 ERA just a 5.6 K/9. Manaea has allowed at least two runs in 18 of his last 20 starts as he has rarely been dominant and over his last three starts (all at home) he owns a 6.91 ERA.

Jake Odorizzi has been a solid starter for Minnesota and he owns a 3.88 ERA with a 3.09 FIP in his last 10 starts. He has a 9.9 K/9 in that span with two or fewer runs allowed in seven of those 10 starts. Despite the sell off the Twins have a 1.99 bullpen ERA the past 10 games and Oakland’s lineup has also been better vs. lefties of late as Odorizzi isn’t an ideal draw. Oakland is just 4-4 the past eight games and the team has failed to top four runs in six of the last nine games. With a 26-10 record in one-run games this has been a fortunate team and the deep bullpen has been worked hard the past two games with disappointing losses dropping the Athletics 1.5 games behind Houston. Oakland has one win in the last six visits to Minneapolis and the home underdog price is appealing on a Twins squad that is still playing hard.

#917 Oakland Athletics (Manaea) -125 over Texas Rangers (Moore) 7:05 PM CT

The Rangers are just 7-13 vs. left-handed starters this season and Texas has the AL’s worst team batting average at just .228. Texas has 68 home runs on the season but that is seven fewer than Oakland’s count with the Athletics also seven games ahead in the standings and 82 runs better in net scoring differential. Oakland is a winning team at 16-14 on the road while the Rangers are just 11-19 in Arlington this season.

[displayProduct type=”carousel” sort=”nameaz” productnamecolor=”#ffffff” pricecolor=”#ffffff” textcolor=”#ffffff” carousel=image,title,price,button,excerpt]

Matt Moore is only 28-years-old but the left-hander has seen his career trajectory fall off a cliff the past two seasons, now 7-20 in his last 27 decisions with a 6.02 ERA. His strikeout numbers continue to fall, on pace for a career low at just 7.4 K/9 in 11 appearances this season while his 4.4 BB/9 is difficult to overcome. Moore has a .396 BABIP right now which is sure to go down but even with a major adjustment he remains a below average AL starter and so far he has posted disastrous numbers in his home starts where batters are hitting .340 against him with a .934 OPS.

Sean Manaea hasn’t lived up to his brilliant April numbers but he has allowed four or fewer runs in all but one start this season and he remains a viable option on the mound. His season ERA is just 3.60 while he has allowed only 14 walks in 75 innings of work this season. Manaea has a lower ERA on the road and June has often been his best month in his career so far and he has strong career numbers vs. the Rangers. Oakland isn’t a great hitting team vs. left-handers but Manaea is the more reliable option backed by the stronger lineup and bullpen with the Rangers in a potential flat spot in the first game back at home after a west coast trip.

#833/834 ‘UNDER 157’ Illinois-Chicago at Oakland 8:00 PM CT

Oakland had won five games in a row but after Friday’s huge road win over Northern Kentucky the Grizzlies got caught with an upset loss at Wright State on Sunday. That was a quick turnaround and technically a fourth straight road game however. Back at home this might appear to be a strong bounce-back spot but Oakland has lost at home twice in Horizon play for just a 2-2 record at the ACO in conference games. The two wins came against Youngstown State and Cleveland State by modest 13-point margins despite those teams being a combined 12-36 on the season.

Illinois-Chicago continues to surge as since starting the season 5-10 the Flames are now above .500 at 12-11 and winners of seven of the last nine in Horizon play. The lone loss in that run came by 10 points hosting Oakland. This is a second straight road game but the 18-point road win in Milwaukee was back on Monday. In the first meeting the rebounding was even in a UIC had an edge in turnovers but an ugly shooting game with only five makes from 3-point range. The Flames rate as one of the top defensive teams in the Horizon only slightly behind Wright State and Northern Kentucky, teams that have handed Oakland three conference losses this season.

[displayProduct type=”carousel” category=”nellys-basketball,nellys-football” productnamecolor=”#ffffff” pricecolor=”#ffffff” textcolor=”#ffffff” carousel=image,title,price,button,excerpt]

Both teams have played difficult conference schedules so far with tough road games out of the way and UIC has won the last four road games they have faced. While Oakland has 14 wins only two wins stand out as wins over teams that rate significantly stronger than UIC and the profile for the Flames continues to grow. This looks like a lot of points to give the superior defensive team and in games where Oakland’s up-tempo offense has been stalled the Grizzlies have been vulnerable. UIC led the first meeting with about nine minutes to go despite the 10-point final margin as another tight finish looks likely.

[displayProduct type=”carousel” sort=”newness” productnamecolor=”#ffffff” pricecolor=”#ffffff” textcolor=”#ffffff” carousel=image,title,price,button,excerpt]

UIC is a tempting underdog but given the lack of quality wins finishing off the game will be a question mark as it was in the first meeting between these teams. Expect a great attempt to slow this game down for the Flames with Oakland at its best playing up tempo and the ‘under’ offers promise Friday night in Horizon action.

#593 Oakland +20.5 over Michigan State 1:30 PM CT

9-1 Michigan State looks like an elite national contender already with wins over North Carolina and Notre Dame while sitting 2-0 in Big Ten play. This is dangerous stretch in the schedule as the Spartans will be a heavy favorite in every game until Big Ten play resumes in January. After cruising to a 25-point win over Southern Utah, the matchup with Oakland will be much more difficult while also playing away from home in this Detroit showcase setting.

[displayProduct type=”carousel” sort=”nameaz” productnamecolor=”#ffffff” pricecolor=”#ffffff” textcolor=”#ffffff” carousel=image,title,price,button,excerpt]

This will be one of the biggest games of the season for Oakland playing close to home against the state’s top basketball program. The Grizzlies took Michigan State to overtime two years ago and lost by just 12 last season. The Grizzlies play at a reckless fast pace but also shoot well from the line and take care of the ball reasonably well despite the high number of possessions. Michigan State’s only loss came in a high scoring game and the Spartans have had issues with turnovers and free throw shooting, areas of vulnerability that can add up more significantly in a high-possession game.

Michigan State has also surrendered over 36 percent 3-point shooting this season and an Oakland team unafraid to shoot from long range will have an opportunity if they catch some hot shooting. After lopsided November losses against Syracuse and Kansas the Grizzlies have shown some growth in recent weeks going 4-1 the last five games and even if former Illinois player Kendrick Nunn has to continue to sit out for Oakland this inflated line is adjusted for his absence. Oakland picked up wins against Georgia and Clemson last year and this is going to be a much bigger game for the underdog.
