Happy Labor Day

We hope everyone enjoys a safe and pleasant holiday – while Labor Day generally means the start of football the unique 2020 sports calendar is in the thick of the NBA & NHL playoffs while the MLB Postseason race is heating up with only a few weeks left in the regular season. College football is officially underway and next week some of the heavyweights will be in action with opening games for several ACC & Big XII teams.

This Wednesday’s Green Sheet (Issue #8) will cover those upcoming college games as well as Week 1 in the NFL, starting Thursday night with a rematch of a memorable playoff game in the AFC Playoffs last season. If you aren’t already subscribed, now is a great time to join in as this could be the longest Green Sheet season ever if there is winter and spring college football. Free Pick Thursday: #959/960 UNDER 9 Pittsburgh Pirates (Williams) at Cincinnati Reds (DeSclafani) 4:10 PM CT

Pittsburgh and Cincinnati have both struggled offensively but the problems have been almost exclusively vs. right-handed pitching. The Pirates for instance have a very strong .855 team OPS vs. left-handers but suffer a dramatic decline vs. right-handers with a dreadful .521 team OPS. Cincinnati meanwhile is an above average hitting team vs. lefties as well with a .775 team OPS but falls below .700 vs. right-handers. Trevor Williams had a fortunate 2018 season and regressed last season. He could be poised to land somewhere in the middle as a capable starter this season. So far that has been the case with a 3.52 ERA and a 8.2 K/9. Williams can be a home run risk and home runs tells the story in the disparity of his 2018 and 2019 seasons. The Reds have some power with 27 home runs this season but they have just 19 in 466 plate appearances vs. right-handers and ultimately have a .197 team batting average in those matchups. The Reds have topped five runs in nine innings just once in the past 12 games while since the calendar turned to August Reds pitching has allowed more than five runs only twice. 3-13 Pittsburgh exploded for 13 runs on Friday but has scored six runs in the past two games. A long layoff with games vs. St. Louis cancelled isn’t likely to help the offense while it will provide some rest for the bullpen. Anthony DeSclafani has not allowed a run while allowing only five hits in 11 innings of work in 2020. He turned a corner last season after an uneven start to his career and was a very effective pitcher for the Reds in 2019. His risk for allowing home runs should be minimal vs. Pittsburgh and that is usually his downfall as he has strong command and is capable of strikeouts. Nine seems like a reach for these teams in a righty/righty matchup with two of the better starters for each team.

Nelly’s cashed in with another NBA winner on Friday and we’ve had a good start to the 2020 MLB season as well. We’ll have updates for Saturday by 11 AM CT and will try to post a free pick on this page later this morning as well.

Free Pick Saturday: #907 Atlanta Braves (Wright) + over Philadelphia Phillies (Arrieta) 5:05 PM CT

Kyle Wright lacks quality numbers at the MLB level but he was the fifth pick in the 2017 draft and still has endless potential. Atlanta’s rotation challenges have left him with a spot moving forward with a longer leash than he might have had otherwise and he should grow into the role. He owns a 12.0 K/9 but walks have been a big problem. The positive offensive numbers for the Phillies have come through a tiny sample size as Philadelphia’s schedule has been flipped upside down in the first two weeks of the season. The Braves remain one of the most dangerous offensive teams with a 74 runs in 14 games and despite the surprising start from the Marlins, Atlanta remains the team to beat in the NL. Jake Arrieta was arguably the best pitcher in baseball in 2015 and 2016 but he has been medicore since with his strikeout numbers declining substantially. He has been a below .500 starter since joining the Phillies and he is on pace for a fifth straight season with an ERA that has climbed. He still commands some line respect as a former Cy Young winner on a popular team and the Braves are worth a look at this price in just about any NL matchup this season.

#618 Rutgers +1.5 over Penn State 6:00 PM CT

Rutgers needs to be taken seriously in the Big Ten race. The Scarlet Knights are already 2-1 in league play with the only defeat in East Lansing while this team also has a non-conference win over Seton Hall. The overall schedule hasn’t been overly difficult but Rutgers won a Big Ten road game last week and is 10-0 at home this season with seven of those wins coming by double-digits. Losing Geo Baker to a thumb injury is a big blow for the long term hopes for the Knights but Rutgers won convincingly at Nebraska Friday and could still remain a competitive team against the middle tier teams in the conference. The interior scoring should remain strong and Steve Pikiell’s team has delivered nationally elite defensive numbers so far in his fourth season. Penn State has seven top 100 wins this season but only two would counts as high of quality as Rutgers and both of those games were in favorable close-to-home or home venues. Saturday’s three-point win in Philadelphia over Iowa featured great fortune as they trailed nearly the entire second half before watching the Hawkeyes falter at the line. Penn State only has one true road win all season and that game was nearly two months ago as this is a dangerous spot on the schedule for a team that has had several narrow wins on the season to boost the record. Penn State lost at home in this series last season while winning by only one in the road meeting and while both teams are clearly improved the Lions haven’t proven they can win Big Ten road games yet.

Nelly’s has turned in back-to-back college winners the past two days including an underdog that won by double-digits last night. We’ve hit over 60% this season and are on a 16-6 run in college basketball while plus nearly 100 stars the past three basketball regular seasons combined!

Bobby Dalton is on an 8-0 run with a perfect start in 2020 while 10-0 conference game picks so far this basketball season!

Big E is riding an 11-5 run in basketball Biggies and has 15* and 20* picks planned this week:

#903 Milwaukee Brewers (Anderson) -115 over Pittsburgh Pirates (Williams) 6:05 PM CT

Chase Anderson has been Mr. Reliable for the Brewers as in 21 of 22 starts this season he has allowed four or fewer runs, allowing three or fewer earned runs in 18 of 22 outings. Since returning from the DL for the stretch run Anderson is 4-1 with a 2.84 ERA in six starts including beating the Pirates last Wednesday.

[displayProduct type=”carousel” sort=”nameaz” productnamecolor=”#ffffff” pricecolor=”#ffffff” textcolor=”#ffffff” carousel=image,title,price,button,excerpt]

Trevor Williams has held a spot in the Pittsburgh rotation with average numbers this season, though he was skipped last week to keep his inning count down. Williams also has been struggling with one win in his last six starts and a 4.54 ERA with a 4.81 BB/9 rate in that span. There isn’t a big advantage for Williams at home and left-handed batters are hitting .294 against him with the Brewers batting seven lefties last night against right-handed Jameson Taillon and a similar deployment will be possible tonight.

Milwaukee’s playoff odds are getting steeper but it is of no fault of the team’s recent results with an 8-2 run to notch win #80 last night. Milwaukee’s lineup is heating up with a .771 team OPS the past 11 games for 5.5 runs per game and the bullpen has been outstanding in recent weeks.

[displayProduct type=”carousel” sort=”newness” productnamecolor=”#ffffff” pricecolor=”#ffffff” textcolor=”#ffffff” carousel=image,title,price,button,excerpt]

After showing some life mid-season the Pirates have called the season with a 5-15 run the past 20 games. Pittsburgh offense has failed top  three runs in 11 of the last 12 games as the Pirates could finish with league worst offensive numbers as a season OPS of just .703 id down to .595 over the past 12 games, averaging 1.8 runs per game.

Bobby Dalton has been red hot on the diamond – don’t miss Tuesday’s Trips-2-Win 2/3 Guarantee! Bobby Dalton has had profits in 18 of his last 22 programs, plus a 15-3 in his 10* Best Bet selections. He is already 9-4 in September and on a 19-7 overall run on the diamond. Three picks are featured in Tuesday’s evening Trips-2-Win 2/3 Guarantee with a 10* Best Bet Total (8-3 O/U run) plus two 5* side plays including an interleague pick (35-20 interleague run) as Dalton looks to build on a 49-33 run in Trips-2-Win 2/3 offers! No charge unless you win at least two out of three on the diamond Tuesday night with the Big Dog!

#954 Philadelphia Phillies (Pivetta) +110 over Miami Marlins (Peters) 6:05 PM CT

24-year old Nick Pivetta has been erratic in his rookie season for the Phillies as his 6.49 ERA suggests but his xFIP is more than two runs lower at 4.39 and his K/9 of 9.5 offers great promise. He pitched well at Miami on September 1 allowing just one run and four hits in six innings and his K/9 is actually 11.0 over his last six starts combined.

[displayProduct type=”carousel” sort=”newness” productnamecolor=”#ffffff” pricecolor=”#ffffff” textcolor=”#ffffff” carousel=image,title,price,button,excerpt]

The Phillies have baseball’s worst record for the season but they are only six games below .500 since the All Star break while a respectable performer at home. Philadelphia is 11-12 in the last 23 games as the offense has been provided a spark with an influx of young talent and on the season this series is knotted at 8-8 with even scoring. Philadelphia owns a .760 team OPS the past 26 games while the Marlins have gone cold after showing some life in mid-August.

Miami momentarily was back in the NL wild card chase and even in shouting distance of the NL East lead but getting swept in Washington in late August has put the Fish on a 2-12 run. Giancarlo Stanton continues an epic pace but Miami has scored just 3.6 runs per game with a .661 team OPS the past 12 contests.

[displayProduct type=”carousel” sort=”nameaz” productnamecolor=”#ffffff” pricecolor=”#ffffff” textcolor=”#ffffff” carousel=image,title,price,button,excerpt]

Dillon Peters has strong numbers in two starts but this will be his first road outing and Philadelphia will get a second chance at Peters already in September. The 25-year old had just a 7.9 K/9 in AA as his numbers are greatly inflated in skipping AAA to the majors as a September call-up. Miami has a bullpen ERA is 6.46 the past 10 games compared with a 2.93 ERA for Phillies relievers and this is going to be a challenging emotional week for the Marlins knowing what has been going on back home.

Nelly’s Baseball is riding a 17-10 run with mostly underdogs for great returns, featuring profits in four of the past five weeks. Bobby Dalton has profited in nine of his last 10 programs while riding a 12-2 run in 10* Best Bets. Don’t forget about baseball with great late season opportunities.
