#926 Cleveland Guardians (Williams) -110 over San Diego Padres (Cease) 6:10 PM CT

Gavin Williams has a 3.36 ERA in over 96 career innings for the Guardians. A 1st round talent from the 2021 draft, Williams has made three starts this July with decent results even without high strikeout numbers. If Cleveland is to hold on to the AL Central lead, Williams may wind up playing a big role and he has the stuff to be a major contributor in the rotation if he can avoid the injuries that have limited his ascension to MLB level. Cleveland has plenty of experience facing Dylan Cease and the right-hander owns a 5.19 ERA in seven career starts at Progressive Field. It has been a rebound season for Cease in his first season with the Padres, but it looks more and more like his 2022 Cy Young runner-up season will be the outlier in his career. Cease has great strikeout potential but his low home run rate from 2022 has not been sustainable as a severe fly-ball pitcher. Cleveland has one of the best bullpens in baseball in great contrast to San Diego and the Guardians delivered an emphatic 7-0 win last night in this pairing. It was just a 1-0 game through seven innings however with Cleveland breaking the game open against the struggling San Diego bullpen with the Padres going through four relievers last night even after a strong quality start from Matt Waldron. Cleveland owns an amazing 31-11 record at home this season and is 87 runs stronger than the Padres in run differential this season despite tonight’s near-even pricing.
