South Dakota State went 3-0 vs. St. Thomas last season including winning 81-80 in St. Paul almost exactly a year ago in a wild finish as the Tommies couldn’t hold an eight-point lead with fewer than four minutes remaining. This should be a key home game for St. Thomas to get the first win in the season series. St. Thomas has quickly established itself as one of the better Summit League teams and this year’s team is already 2-0 in league play. St. Thomas hasn’t played a home game in more than three weeks and is perfect at Schoenecker Arena this season going 6-0 S/U including a win over Montana. Johnny Tauer’s team takes great care of the ball and is an exceptional shooting team, including hitting nearly 39 percent from 3-point range. South Dakota State has made the NCAA Tournament two of the past three seasons, but Eric Henderson’s defense has slipped considerably from last season’s numbers with this year’s profile looking much more like the 19-13 2022-23 team compared to the amazing 30-win 2021-22 team or even last year’s 22-13 team. The Jackrabbits are coming off a 21-point home win last week, but South Dakota State hasn’t won a road game, going 0-4 S/U though it has been a tough schedule, including losing to the Montana team St. Thomas has a win over. Turnovers are a glaring weakness in the statistical profile for the Jackrabbits while the interior defense has struggled, and the efficient St. Thomas offense should be able to pull away.
