#389 Southern Miss +31 over Florida State 7:30 PM CT

Florida State lost to Southern Miss to start the 1989 season as a favorite of more than three touchdowns. Some letdown risk is very possible for the Seminoles in a short week after a huge statement win over LSU Sunday night. It was a tale of two halves as LSU moved the ball well in the first half and deserved a much bigger early lead against the Seminoles, with two blown red zone opportunities in the first half as LSU led 17-14 at the break when a 13 or even 17-point lead would have been realistic. Florida State took advantage of LSU mistakes by wide receivers in the 2nd half and poured it on for a misleading final score, scoring three fourth quarter touchdowns in what had still been a one-score game several minutes into the 4th quarter. The Seminoles have everything in place for a great season, but it must be noted the Southern Miss beat Tulane on the road last season and played tough in narrow losses to Coastal Carolina and South Alabama as this is a program that is climbing back to respectability after a turbulent stretch. The Golden Eagles won a bowl game last season and have a veteran team that should be up for the opportunity on a national stage. An upset isn’t realistic for the Golden Eagles but despite his great game last week and boost in the Heisman odds, Jordan Travis has a rather uneven track record leading Florida State with several high-profile turnover-filled games. It will be incredibly difficult for the Seminoles to bring the same energy and focus as last week into this home opener Saturday night, now facing a favorite spread into the 30s, a price the program has seen in a FBS game just once since 2014 and that was vs. lowly UMass in 2021.
