#695 Tulsa +4.5 over Oral Roberts 7:00 PM CT
Head Coach Paul Mills is now at Wichita State while Max Abmas and Connor Vanover, the stars on the court for Oral Roberts from last season moved on to power five opportunities. Oral Roberts didn’t lose a home game all last season which forces a favorite price today for the Golden Eagles even with a shaky 2-4 start for a program in a major transition. All four losses have come on the road and two of those results were competitive games vs. major conference teams. The home wins under new coach Russell Springman don’t offer a great impression however, defeating Mid-America Christian University by five points and defeating Texas Southern by two points. Tulsa was a brutal 5-25 squad last season in a major transition under Eric Konkol but the Golden Hurricane can reach win #5 today with a minor upset, already off to a 4-1 start. The only loss for Tulsa came in overtime at Little Rock and while the schedule hasn’t been impressive, all four wins came by at least 14 points. The roster has been completely reformed and there is good size on the court while Louisiana Tech transfer Cobe Williams provides a veteran leader in the backcourt. TCU transfer PJ Haggerty has been an impact player as well as the roster is filled with quality transfers with experience. The defensive numbers have improved dramatically this season for Tulsa and while this has been a poor outside shooting team, the volume of outside shots has been low as this group routinely will have interior advantages. That should be the case Saturday against a small Oral Roberts lineup with the Golden Eagles struggling on inside looks so far this season connecting at below 48 percent on 2-point shots. Turnovers can be a concern for Tulsa, but Oral Roberts has a very low rate of creating turnovers this season. There doesn’t appear to be a great deal separating these teams and Tulsa is a year further along in its transition as the Golden Hurricane should be considered a threat for a minor upset.
