#921 Atlanta Braves (Fried) +105 over San Diego Padres (Musgrove) 7:38 PM CT

The Braves looked tired on Tuesday and understandably so. The team had a long emotional day on Monday, losing the wild Game 1 against the Mets and then facing immense pressure in the second game. That game was a success, but it meant a long trip west to San Diego and less than ideal pitching options. Atlanta didn’t have an ideal starting option last night but made the switch early as AJ Smith-Shawver wasn’t going to keep the team in the game. The Braves relied on three veteran relievers to get through the game and the trio was terrific, allowing just one hit in the final six-plus innings to get through the game. None threw more than 28 pitches as everyone may be available today while Atlanta’s high-leverage options were given the day off. Michael King pitched the game of his life last night against the Braves, but Joe Musgrove hasn’t been a consistent option this season. Musgrove had a 3.96 FIP in an abbreviated 19 start season without great home splits. He was better late in the season but also drew several favorable matchups in September. His career playoff ERA is 4.26 and while attention is on the hectic week last week for the Braves, San Diego was on the road in the final week of the regular season with tense games with the Dodgers and Arizona to close the season. In the past 10 games San Diego is batting .203 with just 2.5 runs per nine vs. left-handers and for the season San Diego has just a .690 team OPS vs. left-handers. Max Fried has been one of the NL’s better lefties in recent years including posting a 73-36 record in decisions in his career. He had a 3.25 ERA this season and was just as good on the road while posting a great September with a 2.14 ERA. Atlanta is 7-4 in Fried’s postseason starts and he is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in his career at Petco Park. This has been a resilient Braves team that has fought through numerous injuries to still be playing for something, and this matchup should favor Atlanta to even the series as Atlanta had more opportunities with runners in scoring position last night and still used its top two relievers in the game.
