Arizona’s run to the World Series last season was unexpected but this group doesn’t appear to be going anywhere as the Diamondbacks look likely to be again a competitive playoff threat even it will remain difficult to keep pace with the big spenders in the NL West. After handing New York its first loss last night, Arizona has Merril Kelly on the mound today looking to add to his strong results of the past two seasons with Kelly delivering a win in his 2024 debut. Carlos Rodon opposes Kelly and his signing with New York has not been a success so far, with Rodon pitching poorly in only 14 starts last season and unable to clear five innings in his 2024 debut. Arizona is 30-22 vs. left-handed starters since the start of last season, not counting postseason success, while so far this season Arizona is batting .370 vs. left-handed pitching. New York’s bullpen has been excellent this season with a 1.59 ERA but Arizona isn’t far behind with a 2.19 ERA and opposing batters are hitting just .179 vs. Arizona relievers, compared to .250 vs. New York relievers. The Yankees have averaged only 4.3 runs per game and are batting .241 as a team despite a 5-1 record as while sweeping Houston on the road was an encouraging start for a Yankees team that had some negative headlines this spring, they had two one-runs wins for some good fortune in the first week and Kelly and the Diamondbacks should be a threat to win this series Wednesday.
