Free Pick Tuesday: #969/970 OVER 7.5 New York Yankees (Taillon) at Toronto Blue Jays (Berrios) 6:07 PM CT
These teams went 10 innings on Monday with only five runs scored. Both teams looked a bit flat with New York coming off Sunday night baseball while the Blue Jays were back at home after splitting a six-game road trip vs. playoff contenders. There were more scoring opportunities than the scoring suggests as combined the Yankees and Blue Jays were 2-17 with runners in scoring position. There were only three extra-base hits in the game and the only home run was a solo shot from an unlikely source in Isiah Kiner-Falefa. New York has a 9-8 edge in this series with many lower scoring games, but today’s starters are difficult to count on for a shut down performance. Jameson Taillon stands out with a 13-5 record but after great results in the first two months of the season, he has mostly been a liability in recent weeks with a 4.78 ERA in his last 20 starts, allowing 20 home runs. He allowed three runs in five innings the last time he faced Toronto in August, and he owns a 4.42 ERA on the road for the season. Toronto is 22-8 when Jose Berrios starts but he has a 1.41 WHIP and a 5.27 ERA. He has allowed 10 runs in three starts vs. New York and 16 times this season he has allowed at least three runs in a start. Neither bullpen has lived up to its reputation of late with a 4.61 ERA for the Yankees and a 5.36 ERA for the Blue Jays in the past 10 games. The 10-game splits for both lineups are also excellent with New York scoring 6.2 runs per nine and Toronto scoring 5.3 runs per nine vs. right-handers. The past four games between these teams in Toronto have featured 43 combined runs as another low-scoring game tonight seems much less likely.
