#903 New York Mets (Manaea) -135 over Washington Nationals (Herz) 5:45 PM CT
The Mets won the lefty-lefty pairing between these teams on Monday, but it took a wild finish with New York blowing an 8th inning lead and then barely holding on in the 10th inning despite leading by six runs. The late inning drama was sparked by Carlos Mendoza giving rookie Tyler Jay the extra inning and he struggled but the two extra-base hits he allowed were simply well-placed in the corners for some tough luck. Both bullpens struggled yesterday, and Washington used seven pitchers compared to only five for the Mets to start this series with neither team having the off day that most of the league enjoyed after the weekend. Washington is 12-10 vs. left-handed starters while the Mets are 11-13 but the batting splits present the opposite picture. On the season the Mets hit 32 points better than the Nationals vs. left-handers while featuring a 5.5 to 3.8 edge in runs per nine averages. In the past 10 games the Mets have hit .308 with 7.2 runs per nine vs. left-handers. 23-year-old rookie DJ Herz has a 5.48 ERA in his five starts, posting great strikeout potential but also at risk of allowing home runs with five allowed in just over 21 innings. The Mets have also already faced Herz, beating him a month ago with seven hits and four runs in four innings. Veteran Sean Manaea has solid numbers in his first season with the Mets and he has allowed just eight hits and four runs over his last three starts combined. While there could again be some late drama in this game with the Mets struggling in the bullpen, Washington has a 6.27 ERA from relievers in the past 10 games as the Nationals have had similar challenges in the late innings and the Mets have the edge in the starting role and in the lineup in this matchup.
