#964 Toronto Blue Jays (Ryu) -110 over Baltimore Orioles (Bradish) 6:07 PM CT
The Orioles pitching staff navigated out of trouble consistently on Monday night to take a big first game in this four-game set with the Blue Jays as the tight AL East race continues. Toronto wound up 0-10 with runners in scoring position while the Orioles got a huge two-out two-run double in the first inning to take the early advantage on a night when Chris Bassitt didn’t have his best stuff. Baltimore had to use its top three relievers yesterday including a 35-pitch tense outing from closer Felix Bautista, who was saved with a spectacular diving catch in the ninth inning on what would have likely been a game-tying hit. Bo Bichette also left yesterday’s game in the third inning, injured running the bases to turn a double into an out. Even if Bichette sits this is a formidable Toronto lineup and the Blue Jays will fetch a discounted price Tuesday relative to Monday’s game with a pitching pairing of Kyle Bradish against Hyun-jin Ryu. After starring for the Dodgers for several years Ryu hasn’t had the same success in Toronto but is set to return tonight looking to resume an injury-plagued season. Ryu pitched well in a four-start run in May and early June posting a 2.75 ERA and he’ll be supported by a Toronto bullpen that owns a 0.51 ERA in the past five games. Kyle Bradish has a 3.29 ERA this season, but a much higher FIP as he has been fortunate to allow only 10 home runs in 19 starts. His last start was a shaky outing in Philadelphia, and he has taken five losses in his last 10 starts, posting a 4.09 ERA on the road for the season. The Jays are 29-22 at home and own a slight edge in run differential for the season compared to the first place Orioles. Baltimore has a great record vs. left-handers but is batting just .202 the past 10 games vs. southpaws and while Ryu is a bit of a wild card in his first start in two months, Bradish has been an average road option and the Orioles may not have their full bullpen options Tuesday. The Blue Jays had plenty of opportunities last night and could have better results tonight at a favorable price for a quality team at home off a loss.
