#915 Detroit Tigers (Mize) +115 over Baltimore Orioles (Suarez) 12:35 PM CT

Detroit got a big win yesterday in Baltimore to even this series, climbing within a half-game of the final AL Wild Card spot. It was not without late drama as two leads disappeared for the Tigers while getting out of a major jam in the ninth inning to force extra innings. Former #1 overall pick Casey Mize has not had significant MLB success yet, but he has provided decent late season starts since rejoining the team in late August. He allowed just one run in his last start in a big game in Kansas City and for the season his FIP is a respectable 4.00. Ty Madden could wind up opening in this game with the rookie posting nice returns in four late season appearances. Albert Suarez has a 3.60 ERA for the Orioles in his return to MLB after a significant absence, including pitching in the KBO the past two seasons. Suarez has modest strikeout numbers, and he has a 7.24 ERA in three September starts, allowing four home runs and six walks in just over 13 innings of work. The Baltimore bullpen has been a mess with a 5.34 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP in the past 10 games compared to excellent recent late inning results from the Tigers and the strain on the bullpen was greater yesterday on the Orioles who used eight pitchers on Saturday. Baltimore has three lineup regulars on the IL right now as this team is going to limp into the playoffs with a current 5-10 run since September 4. Baltimore had a losing record in August and July as well as it has been some time since the team was playing like a serious contender. Detroit has work to do to make the playoffs, but the Tigers went 17-11 in August and are 12-6 already in September. The Tigers are 10 games above .500 since the All-Star Break with a +43 scoring differential and in September the lineup has scored at least four runs 11 times.
