#955/956 UNDER 8 Arizona Diamondbacks (Nelson) at Pittsburgh Pirates (Skenes) 12:35 PM CT
Arizona and Pittsburgh combined for only 12 hits and six runs last night as the Pirates moved to two games above .500. Pittsburgh used six pitchers, but no reliever was overly extended even with the starting efforts cut short by a significant rain delay. The Pirates are 30-23 since June 1, averaging a score of 4.4 to 3.9. The Pirates have a just a .654 team OPS in the past 12 games as the rise into the NL Central and Wild Card races have been fueled by the pitching staff. Rookie Paul Skenes is at the forefront of the staff with an incredible start to his career posting an 11.5 K/9 and a 1.90 ERA, while only twice in 13 starts allowing more than two runs. Ryne Nelson has a 4.53 ERA but a much more impressive 3.76 FIP this season as he has been very effective, albeit in a different way than Skenes as his K/9 is just 6.8. Nelson had mediocre results early in the season, but he put together a great six-start run in July with a 2.41 ERA while allowing only 28 hits in over 37 innings and watching his strikeout numbers climb significantly. The 9-8 game on Friday to start this series featured great scoring efficiency as the Diamondbacks hit five home runs while Pittsburgh had seven hits with runners in scoring position. Neither of those things are common occurrences and while the bullpens have been strained a bit in this series so far, Skenes rarely needs much support while Nelson has been in his best form of the season in recent weeks. The weather looks calm Sunday afternoon and six of the past eight Skenes starts have wound up with five or fewer total runs.
