FREE PICK MONDAY: #969 Chicago White Sox (Lynn) -110 over Seattle Mariners (Gonzales) 5:40 PM CT

The White Sox took a 5-1 loss on Sunday but still won two of three in a big home series with the Twins. Chicago is just a .500 team but is only two games out of the AL Central lead with recent struggles for Cleveland and Minnesota. The White Sox are 33-31 on the road this season and could be a threat Monday night even with a long trip west to face a hot Seattle team. The Mariners are 10 games behind Houston in the AL West but the playoff drought appears ready to end as Seattle has risen to the top AL wild card spot. Seattle has won seven in a row and is riding a 21-10 run since August started. This is the first game back home after sweeping a six-game road trip vs. the AL Central and Sunday’s contest was a demanding game that should take a toll on this series. A four-and-half hour rain delay paused yesterday’s game and forced starter George Kirby out of the game after only 39 pitches. Adding to the challenge, were two extra-innings, as Seattle wound up using 10 pitchers on Sunday. The Mariners were fortunate as Cleveland went 2-14 with runners in scoring position and the despite the wins piling up, the Mariners have just a .693 team OPS in the past two weeks compared to a .772 team OPS for the White Sox. On the season Seattle has a .687 team OPS vs. right-handers while Chicago is one of the best hitting teams in baseball vs. left-handers with a .776 season OPS. In the past 10 games Seattle is batting .219 vs. right-handers while Chicago is batting .274 vs. left-handers. Marco Gonzales has 12 losses in 26 starts for the Mariners with a 22.9 percent CSW% that is among the worst of all qualified MLB starters this season. Gonzales has a 5.08 ERA in August even while facing several of the worst offensive teams in the AL in that span. Lance Lynn was a Cy Young contender last season for the White Sox. His season numbers are marginal this season, but it was clear he was rushed back too soon from injury. Lynn is finding his form again with a 2.45 ERA in his last six starts while posting a 10.3 K/9 and a 0.7 BB/9 and he could be the key to Chicago making a playoff push joining Dylan Cease as a top tier starter. On the surface Seattle has the bullpen edge in this pairing but yesterday’s extended game changes that equation with Matt Brash, Andres Munoz, and closer Paul Sewald all pitching in each of the past two days. Things have been falling Seattle’s way as it is tough to go against a team on a seven-game winning streak, but the White Sox should be at an advantage on Monday to start this series.
