#958 Milwaukee Brewers (Keuchel) -125 over Washington Nationals (Parker) 3:10 PM CT
Milwaukee has lost two in a row as the All-Star break approaches as the once massive NL Central lead is closing with all four teams behind the Brewers playing well in recent games. Losing Thursday against Paul Skenes is forgivable, but the Milwaukee lineup had a flat performance last night against Washington’s marginal pitching staff, managing only four hits and two runs, while Washington was able to get to Freddy Peralta. Washington’s lineup has been better than its reputation against right-handers but against left-handers the Nationals average just 3.5 runs per nine while batting .226. In the past 10 games that scoring average is just 1.5 runs per nine while Washington is hitting .204, while in contrast the Brewers are batting .291 with 5.8 runs per nine vs. southpaws in that span. Mitchell Parker has been effective in 16 starts as a rookie this season but his FIP is about a half-run higher than his strong 3.44 ERA while his 7.3 K/9 doesn’t impress. Parker has featured a .259 BABIP this season so far and his success has mostly been at home where his ERA is 2.82. The bullpen for Washington has been an adventure most of the season and the unit was extended last night while featuring a 4.91 ERA with a 1.57 WHIP in the past five games. In contrast the Brewers have a 0.86 bullpen WHIP with foes batting .190 in the past five games against relievers. Dallas Keuchel was a bit of a desperation addition for Milwaukee, but the Brewers are 3-0 in his starts and he has provided adequate results on the mound even while facing a difficult trio of games, facing the defending World Series champions, pitching at Coors Field, and having a scoreless effort at the Dodger Stadium in his last start. Washington hit .545 with runners in scoring position last night to snap a five-game slide with Washington still posting just 15 runs in total over the past six games. Milwaukee’s lineup has provided a bit of a boom-or-bust stretch of late, but the lefty-lefty draw Saturday should provide a favorable path for Milwaukee to even this series.
