#967 Minnesota Twins (Ryan) -145 over Cincinnati Reds (Phillips) 5:40 PM CT
The Reds continue to stay relevant in the NL Wild Card race despite having the worst scoring differential of any of the teams in the mix. Cincinnati is just a half-game out of the final spot, but they would need to jump over two teams in the current standings. Cincinnati looked like a playoff team in June and July but the Reds are just 19-24 while -46 in scoring since August 1, even while winning five of the past seven to climb back into the picture. The Reds have leaned on young pitching all season, but Connor Phillips is in just his third MLB start tonight and the returns at the MLB level have been rough with an 8.31 ERA and six walks allowed in fewer than nine innings. Phillips had a 6.7 BB/9 in AAA as this isn’t a new problem while his adequate 4.69 AAA ERA this season has come with a 0.2 HR/9 that quickly proved meaningless in the leap to the MLB level where he has already allowed three home runs. The Twins still haven’t clinched the AL Central as Cleveland has put together a surge while Minnesota still has a long shot path to climb to the #2 seed in the AL with a strong finish through a favorable schedule while the AL West teams battle it out. This is a Minnesota team playing well right now, 10-6 in September and +44 in scoring. Minnesota only needed two innings of relief in a shutout win yesterday and Joe Ryan has been sharp with a 2.75 ERA in his last four starts since returning from a short IL stint in August.
