Arizona is #1 in the NL Wild Card standings right now, but they are only three games ahead of #4 Atlanta, who would be the first team out right now. The Diamondbacks need to step on the gas with a difficult remaining schedule including playing the Brewers seven times in the next two weeks. Arizona swept Milwaukee in the playoffs last season and the Diamondbacks are 33-16 since the All-Star Break. Arizona was off on Thursday while Milwaukee had a 3-0 win in San Francisco last night. The Brewers are just 4-5 in September with modest scoring, held to three or fewer runs in six of the past seven games. Milwaukee used three key relievers last night including 18 pitches from Devin Williams. Freddy Peralta has a 4.29 FIP this season and walks and home runs have been a problem as an 84-62 Brewers team is just 5-7 in Peralta starts since the start of July. Milwaukee is 66-39 vs. right-handed starters but just 18-23 vs. left-handers. Eduardo Rodriguez has made only six starts for Arizona and his numbers haven’t been strong but his past track record commands respect as he still has a chance to make his acquisition pay off for the Diamondbacks. Arizona doesn’t have the bullpen advantage in this matchup, but the lineup has scored at least five runs in eight of the past 10 games and the off day Thursday that Milwaukee did not have, should put the Diamondbacks in a better position to start this series.
