#902 Chicago Cubs (Wesneski) -120 over Milwaukee Brewers (Ross) 1:10 PM CT
Hayden Wesneski has pitched effectively as both a starter and reliever at the MLB level the past two seasons and so far in 2024 his ERA is just 0.87. It is a small sample size and Wesneski has only started once this season but the pitching depth for the Cubs continues to provide reason to believe that Chicago can stay in playoff contention all season. While nothing is decided in May, this is the first meeting of the season between the Cubs and Brewers with a regional rivalry that has often been pivotal in the NL Central standings in recent years. Milwaukee has a one-game lead in the standings now, but the Cubs are 10-3 at Wrigley Field this season. Pitching injuries have put even more pressure on Joe Ross to contribute to the rotation for the Brewers with Jakob Junis, DL Hall, and Wade Miley all on the IL. Milwaukee also doesn’t have Christian Yelich in the lineup right now, but the Brewers scored 15 runs Tuesday and Wednesday to bounce back from a 3-game slide. Ross owns a career 4.32 ERA while four games below .500 in the win/loss record and his best two seasons were back in 2015 and 2016. So far in 2024 Ross has a 5.40 ERA even with the lowest HR/9 of his career through 25 innings. Walks have been an issue for Ross this season and it may take more significant time for Ross to find his rhythm after missing the past two seasons due to Tommy John surgery. The bullpen contrast has been severe in the last week with the Brewers holding a 10.19 bullpen ERA compared to a 2.81 ERA for Chicago relievers in the last five games. Chicago had a tough loss yesterday while Milwaukee was off, but the Cubs should be in a good position to take the first game of the series.
