#907/908 OVER 9.5 Colorado Rockies (Flexen) at St. Louis Cardinals (Wainwright) 7:15 PM CT
The Cardinals out-hit the Twins last night but managed only three runs thanks to going hitless with runners in scoring position. The Cardinals have scored the 12th most runs in MLB this season, more than several high-profile playoff contenders including the Padres, Blue Jays, Phillies, Giants, and Yankees. This is the team that has allowed the seventh most runs in MLB however and the trade deadline moves won’t help the pitching staff in the short term. Adam Wainwright’s decision to return after his planned retirement after last season has proven disastrous. Wainwright is having by far the worst season of his career with a 7.18 ERA and just a 4.9 K/9. His ERA at Busch Stadium is 8.18 and only once in 13 starts has he allowed fewer than three runs. While the Rockies are expected to allow runs at home, Colorado has allowed five or more runs in 14 of the past 20 road games as well. Chris Flexen was traded to the Mets about a month ago and released and he will get a shot to improve on his 8.08 season ERA now with the Rockies. Flexen, like Wainwright, has been a shell of his solid form from last season with terrible results in 2023 and he allowed six runs while getting 11 outs in his Colorado debut. These teams also have two of the worst bullpens in MLB and in the past 10 games the Rockies have a 7.36 bullpen ERA and St. Louis has a 5.45 ERA. While both teams have downgraded their lineups in the last few days, this has been a high-scoring series with 11 or more runs in seven of the past nine meetings.
