#974 Toronto Blue Jays (Berrios) -145 over Chicago Cubs (Assad) 6:07 PM CT
The Blue Jays took a tough 4-3 loss on Thursday, posting a 10-5 edge in hits while managing only three runs despite 13 at-bats with runners in scoring position. George Springer and manager John Schneider were ejected in the game, boiling over from a number of missed calls by home plate umpire Jeremie Rehak. 36-25 since June 1 Toronto has been a consistent performer while Jose Berrios has quietly erased a tough first month of the season and owns a 2.74 ERA in his last 17 starts while posting excellent numbers at home this season. The Blue Jays have a 0.64 ERA from relievers in the past five games, getting at least seven innings from starters in three of the past five days. The Cubs have risen to be legitimate NL Central threats, but Chicago is coming off a tough series in New York, scoring only eight runs in losing a series with the Mets. Javier Assad made his first start since April on Saturday, and he allowed two runs while getting 11 outs. He isn’t likely to pitch more than four innings tonight and his 4.51 FIP is more realistic than his 3.35 ERA with a very high walk rate this season. The Cubs have a 5.29 bullpen ERA in the past five games and while the offense has posted a few big scores in recent weeks, Chicago pitching had allowed four or more runs in eight of the past 10 games. Toronto is 22-10 vs. NL teams this season and has eight more wins vs. winning teams than the Cubs own.
