#915/196 UNDER 8.5 Kansas City Royals (Lynch) at Minnesota Twins (Mahle) 12:10 PM CT
The Twins peppered out 16 hits last night but they saw six-innings of soft toss from Zack Greinke and only three hits went for extra-bases. In the blowout loss the Royals didn’t use important relievers and the Twins are a much less productive offensive team vs. left-handers. On the season Minnesota’s team OPS vs. left-handed pitching is .713 and in the past 10 games Minnesota has averaged only 3.5 runs per nine vs. left-handed pitching. Minnesota had been held to five or fewer runs in seven games in a row prior to last night as a once promising playoff position appears to be slipping away. Second year starter Daniel Lynch has marginal season numbers, but he owns a 28.7 percent CSW% in the past month, not far behind Tyler Mahle’s 29.1 percent CSW% as both starters should be capable of a strong outing. Lynch has provided five scoreless innings in two of his last three starts even while facing playoff contenders and he has allowed three or fewer runs in six of his last seven starts, while posting much stronger numbers on the road, including a 10.8 K/9 away from Kauffman Stadium. Lynch has a 3.86 ERA in three starts vs. Minnesota this season and while the bullpen for Kansas City is a mess, the team has had at least five innings from its starters in nine of the past 10 games to put the unit in better shape right now. Mahle had a gem in his last start, and he has been one of the most reliable pitchers in MLB since late May. The Royals have just a .678 team OPS vs. right-handers on the season while batting only .209 the past five games as both teams could have regulars out of today’s lineup with an early start contest.
