Free Pick Monday: #953 Milwaukee Brewers (Peralta) -115 over St. Louis Cardinals (Flaherty) 6:45 PM CT
Looking to turn its season around, the Cardinals won five of six on last week’s road trip including a sweep in Boston over the weekend. That included a 9-1 win last night at Fenway Park, traveling late last night back home to St. Louis for a big division series with the Brewers, for the first head-to-head game of the season between the NL Central rivals. Milwaukee has cooled from a hot April start to the season but is 23-17 on the season with a winning road record. The Brewers swept three home games vs. Kansas City over the weekend and are 17-11 vs. right-handed starters compared to an 11-20 record for the Cardinals. These teams are separated by 30 runs in scoring differential and Freddy Peralta appears on pace to match his excellent 2021 season, posting a 10.2 K/9 and a 3.42 FIP so far this season in seven starts. The Cardinals are hoping for a comeback season for Jack Flaherty who has not had a full season workload since his strong 2019 campaign. Flaherty has not matched his past strikeout success however and his command has been shaky with a 6.2 BB/9. Flaherty has a 5.66 FIP at this point in the season and has allowed three or more runs in five consecutive starts while posting a 9.45 ERA at home. Milwaukee should have a bullpen edge in this pairing with a 2.38 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP in the past five games for Milwaukee relievers and given the tough turnaround on the schedule, Milwaukee should be a threat to take the season opener in this series as just a slight favorite.
