#909/910 OVER 8 San Francisco Giants (Bivens) at San Diego Padres (Musgrove) 3:10 PM CT

It will be incredibly warm in San Diego this afternoon with temperatures in the mid-90s and that should be a boost to the offensive potential in this game. San Francisco won 6-3 last night even with aces on the mound and the starting pitching pairing is less promising Sunday. Joe Musgrove has pitched at an elite level for a few stretches in his career but his 15-start sample in 2024 has provided average results with an 8.3 K/9 and a 4.19 FIP. He missed all of June and July and in five starts since returning the numbers have been good, but he has drawn mostly favorable matchups as well. San Francisco had four runs on Musgrove earlier this season and San Diego still used three relievers yesterday even with Dylan Cease going six innings. Rookie Spencer Bivens has mostly pitched out of the bullpen this season, but he had a four-inning relief appearance on Wednesday and can be counted on for a few innings to start this game. His K/9 is just 6.2 this season and he has allowed six home runs in fewer than 35 innings as his FIP is 4.83 next to an impressive 2.86 ERA. The San Francisco bullpen has good recent splits, but the Giants have faced the Cardinals, Rays, and Tigers in the past three series. The Giants also used three key relievers in closing out yesterday’s game. San Diego had 10 at-bats with runners in scoring position yesterday but managed only three runs and Saturday’s game featured five double plays as both teams were unable to capitalize on opportunities.
