#904 Pittsburgh Pirates (Ortiz) -105 over Cincinnati Reds (Martinez) 12:35 PM CT

After losing the first two games of this series Cincinnati stormed back with a 10-2 win on Saturday in Pittsburgh. Jake Woodford has simply not been a viable option for the Pirates on the mound with the Pirates 0-6 in his starts. It has been a disappointing month in August for Pittsburgh, but the offense has shown some recent life, scoring 37 runs over the past nine games while going 5-4 with two one-run losses. Luis Ortiz owns a 3.56 ERA this season in 101 innings for Pittsburgh and he has solid numbers in his return to a starting role since late June, including five of his nine starts featuring two or fewer runs allowed. The Pittsburgh bullpen has been excellent despite the losing month, featuring an 0.87 WHIP with a 1.45 ERA in the past 10 games. Cincinnati’s bullpen in contrast owns a 4.57 ERA in that span. The Reds are just 2-6 in the past eight games and Cincinnati has failed to top one run in half of those games. Nick Martinez put together two scoreless starts for the Reds over 12 innings in early August, but his last two starts have been more in line with the career norms for Martinez. He has allowed 14 hits and nine runs in his last two outings, spanning just over 10 innings. Martinez owns a career 4.75 FIP as this season’s success doesn’t fit his career profile with much lower HR/9 and BB/9 rates than his norms in a somewhat small 2024 sample that mostly includes low-leverage relief innings. Both teams appear to have dropped out of the NL Wild Card race in recent weeks but the Pirates pitching staff should hold a clear edge on Sunday as Pittsburgh looks to extend a 6-3 season edge vs. Cincinnati.
