#973 Los Angeles Angels (Canning) -105 over Washington Nationals (Corbin) 5:45 PM CT

Washington stole a 3-2 win over the Angels last night in extra-innings. The Angels led nearly the entire game but allowed a sacrifice fly after a pair of singles in the eighth inning for the tie and Los Angeles didn’t score with two runners on in the 10th inning opportunity. The Angels had a 10-7 edge in hits and a 13-7 edge in at-bats with runners in scoring position for a clear production and opportunity edge but didn’t get the job done even with a rare 3-hit game from Anthony Rendon. The Los Angeles bullpen took the loss but ultimately allowed only three hits in nearly four innings and the unit has been good lately, posting a 3.08 ERA with opponents batting .207 in the past 10 games. In contrast Washington has a 4.95 bullpen ERA in that span, allowing 6.1 runs per nine. The Angels are a near .500 team vs. left-handers and have hit .309 with 5.5 runs per nine vs. lefties in the past five games. Patrick Corbin is 2-12 with a 5.88 ERA this season and while he has deserved slightly better, his record is 29-69 since his strong 2019 season for the World Series champion Nationals. Corbin had a 7.27 ERA in July and he has allowed at least three runs in seven of his last eight starts. The Angels have a 21-19 record since June 24 and Griffin Canning has pitched a bit better than his season statistics suggest. He had a tough start to the season but owns a steady 4.37 ERA in his last 17 starts with 11 outings of at least five innings with three or fewer runs allowed. Washington has averaged just 3.8 runs per nine vs. right-handers in the past 10 games while held to four or fewer runs seven times in the past 10 games. Washington is 10 games below .500 vs. right-handed starters this season and while the Nationals technically own a slight season edge in record compared with the Angels the teams have been headed in opposite directions despite Washington getting a fortunate one-run comeback win last night.
