Free Pick Sunday #844 SMU -6.5 over East Carolina 2:00 PM CT
It has been a steep fall for SMU this season after a consistent run of success in the last decade as Rob Lanier’s first season in Dallas has the Mustangs just 9-18 overall and 4-10 in AAC play. The Mustangs lost by 15 at home Thursday hosting Houston but have had several close losses, as four AAC misses have come by five or fewer points. SMU has won two of the past three home games and two of the past three home losses were two-point results for competitive showings in Dallas despite the poor record. East Carolina won hosting SMU in early February in a tight contest with a five-point final. The difference in the game was 3-point shooting with three more makes for the Pirates at home. East Carolina climbed over .500 for the season with a big win Wednesday hosting Cincinnati. The Pirates had a long break ahead of that game as a game with Tulane was postponed due to the death of broadcaster Jeff Charles. It was an inspired performance for by far the highest quality win of the season. A lot also went right with a big edge at the line and a dominant rebounding performance while one of Cincinnati’s best players did not play. East Carolina has been playing without Javon Small for the past seven games and the Pirates have not won a game away from home since December while only winning one true road game all season. Both teams have just four wins in league play, but East Carolina has played a far more favorable schedule at this point as they have not faced Houston or Tulane, top AAC contenders that are 4-0 against SMU. East Carolina is one of the least experienced teams in the nation and SMU will have a size edge that will make the worst 2-point scoring rate in the ACC for the Pirates difficult to improve on.
