FREE PICK #915/916 OVER 7.5 Tampa Bay Rays (Hill) at Kansas City Royals (Keller) 7:10 PM CT

There is a bit of an overreaction to the cold weather and snow that fell in the Kansas City area. It will still be in the 40s for this game but the win will be blowing out to right field and any potential field conditions should be resolved by game time. The 9-8 Rays have scored 4.2 runs per game but are actually -10 in scoring this season as the squad that dominated on the mound last season hasn’t been getting the job done in 2021. Kansas City is also a 9-win team on top of the AL Central, posting 4.2 runs per game and allowing the same. Even with Monday’s loss to start this series the Royals are on a 5-2 run after going hitless with runners in scoring position last night. The Rays went just 2-9 to settle for four runs and both teams needed to use key relievers last night. 41-year-old Rich Hill has been consistent this season, allowing four runs in every start. He has faced three struggling offenses this season and has still posted a 7.53 ERA and Kansas City has plenty of recent experience against him, while also posting better numbers vs. left-handers so far this season. Brad Keller hasn’t recaptured his 2018 success with shaky results since 2019. He has one of the lowest strikeout rates of any regular MLB starter and so far his ERA is 9.58 in three starts this season as he may not be a regular MLB starter for long. His .436 BABIP will go down but more alarming his six walks allowed in just 10 innings this season for a pitcher that needs to lead with his command. Tampa Bay has a 5.02 bullpen ERA this season for a surprising development and this looks like an attainable figure in tonight’s AL clash even if the conditions are less than ideal for offense.

FREE PICK SATURDAY 915/916 OVER 7.5 Tampa Bay Rays (Kittredge) at New York Yankees (Cole) 12:05 PM CT

Tampa Bay has allowed 79 runs already this season, currently the most surrendered in the American League in a significant departure from last season’s success. The Rays are 4-1 vs. the Yankees to build on last season’s dominance in the series but this year the offense is doing the work with 32 runs scored in five games vs. New York. Gerrit Cole being on the mound keeps this number extremely low but Tampa Bay faced Cole three times in the regular season last year and the Yankees ace never won, allowing nine runs in those three starts while clearing five innings just once. Cole did beat Tampa Bay in Game 1 of the ALDS in a 9-3 result but he allowed two home runs in that game. Tampa Bay would win the decisive Game 5 in which Cole started as the team has plenty of experience and past success against him. Andrew Kittredge is the opener for the Rays Sunday and he won’t be asked to get more than a few outs in this game. It would normally be Ryan Yarbrough’s turn in the rotation but after back-to-back terrible outings in a starting role, Tampa Bay will likely aim to insert Yarbrough an inning or two into the game. The 5-9 Yankees haven’t hit up to expectations this season but New York has significantly stronger numbers vs. left-handers in the small early season sample. New York had just one hit with runners in scoring position in yesterday’s loss and Tampa Bay needed four key relievers to throw yesterday as the options won’t be ideal on Sunday. New York also used significant outings from Justin Wilson and Jonathan Loaisiga on Saturday. Both lineups have strong walk rates and serious home run potential even if sitting short of expectations so far this season. The weather has been cool in many early season games but a pleasant Sunday afternoon game is ahead and a wind of around 10 MPH is expected to be heading out towards center field for this game. The ‘over’ is 11-4 in Tampa Bay games this season and while Cole is an elite starter, the ‘over’ has hit in five of his last eight starts and his career ERA vs. the Rays is 4.07.

Huge Hockey Saturday

A layup in the final seconds halted our 6-0 run in the NBA but we still own a tremendous record in pro hoops this season and for the past four seasons combined. Saturday’s smaller slate didn’t present a rated pick opportunity but there is a possible play ahead for Sunday.

Nelly’s MLB has hit two of our last three and we have a Late Night TOTAL on the schedule Saturday night!

FREE PICK #544 Toronto Raptors -2 over Orlando Magic 6:40 PM CT

Toronto had a brutal month of March and at 22-34 the Raptors have been a huge disappointment this season. There has been a bit of recent life for the team in what has been a challenging season in its adopted home in Florida. Toronto has won four of the past eight games including a nice win on Wednesday and the schedule does present some favorable opportunities the next two weeks ahead of a difficult path in early May. Making a climb to the playoffs is unlikely but this is not a team likely to completely mail it in the rest of the way either. Toronto still has a positive scoring differential despite the poor record and that average is more than eight points per game stronger than Orlando’s differential. The Magic are just 8-18 S/U on the road this season but they enter this game off a surprising win in Chicago on Wednesday. The roster was torn down at the trade deadline and the team gave a short-term surge but now has lost six of the past seven. The defensive numbers are among the worst in the league and Orlando had allowed 111 or more points in six straight games before the upset win on Wednesday. Toronto is 2-0 in this series this season with a pair of double-digit wins and while Kyle Lowry remains out there is a good chance the Raptors will have Gary Trent of DeAndre’ Bembry back today. The Raptors were just a 1.5-point favorite against Atlanta a few days ago as this is a very low number against one of the league’s worst teams. Toronto has a poor spread record this season against marginal competition but keep in mind many of those results came early in the season when the Raptors were expected to be one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference. Toronto was a 6.5-point favorite in February in Orlando to show what a massive adjustment has taken place and while the roster will not be close to 100 percent today, the Magic roster is still the lesser grouping.

929/930 (DH #2 7 innings) OVER 6 Boston Red Sox (Rodriguez) at Minnesota Twins (Berrios) 4:10 PM CT

There is a chance of rain this afternoon with cool conditions in Minneapolis as Boston and Minnesota try to play a double-header. The second game in particular could favor the offenses and the ‘over’ has promise with a depressed total for the seven-inning contest. The humidity will be extremely high and the winds will be strong out to right center to boost the potential for scoring. Since starting 0-3 Boston has won seven in a row and yesterday’s 4-2 win was the first time on that streak the Red Sox didn’t score at least six runs. Conditions were extremely cold yesterday in the 4-2 game and while still early season conditions today, it will be slightly warmer. The Red Sox and Twins combined to go 1-14 with runners in scoring position on Tuesday and there were three double plays. Both bullpens saw significant usage, in particular Boston using four top bullpen options. Minnesota’s bullpen has been a problem so far as the Twins are 5-5 with several late inning losses already. New closer Alex Colome has not been able to get the job done while Rocco Baldelli still isn’t giving full trust to Taylor Rogers. Tyler Duffey has also battled command issues and won’t be a great candidate to come in with runners on base. Jose Berrios has been outstanding in two starts this season but he has also faced two struggling offensive teams. This will be a tougher matchup and Berrios hasn’t shown great consistency in his career. Eduardo Rodriguez got the win in his 2021 debut but he allowed two home runs in five innings. Both pitchers have unsustainably low BABIP numbers at this point in the season and with significant power on both sides this total looks fair to reach, particularly in the bullpen strain is elevated after the first game of the double-header.
