FREE PICK WEDNESDAY: #306050 Penn State -7 over Wagner 6:00 PM CT

The Big Ten opener started strong for Penn State with an early 12-5 lead on Ohio State but things turned sharply from there as Penn State has slid to just 4-4 this season in the first season for Micah Shrewsberry. This is a key ‘get-right’ spot for the Nittany Lions off back-to-back losses and with Michigan State up next on Saturday. Normally that might mean a look-ahead situation, but Penn State can’t take anything for granted and Wagner has made some noise this season with a win at VCU, a team Penn State only narrowly beat early last season. Wagner was 13-7 last season closing the year on a great run before getting upset in the Northeast Tournament, but the Seahawks have not fared well playing up. In the only major conference test last season Wagner lost by 33 to Seton Hall and that pairing did not go much better this season losing by 22 last week. Wagner has only played four games as the team had to cancel its games in late November as this group is not likely where it would like to be given that the starting five includes three new players including two freshmen this season. Wagner has shot below 30 percent from 3-point range and has an extremely high turnover rate, problematic numbers when trying to play up for an upset bid against a major conference foe. The upset over VCU was simply a brutal shooting game for the Rams, who shot 45 percent from inside the arc and 47 percent at the free throw line. This is step up in competition for Penn State compared to the early season wins over Youngstown State, St. Francis, and Cornell but Penn State won all three of those games by convincing margins and these teams have similar paces as the favorite won’t be disrupted by Wagner’s preferred tempo. Wagner has extremely low volume rates of 3-point shooting and free throw shooting, relying on getting to the basket but the size edge the Seahawks enjoy against fellow smaller conference teams won’t be there as Penn State has good size in the backcourt and John Harrar patrolling the paint. Penn State is allowing just over 45 percent on 2-point shots this season, a top 70 rate nationally and that is really the only scoring area for Wagner.
