Free Pick Saturday: #693 Middle Tennessee State +12.5 over Murray State 7 PM CT

There is not a great deal of weight in a 7-1 start for Middle Tennessee State and this is the first road game of the season but this feels like an inflated spread built on Murray State’s reputation. The Racers are 6-1 but recall last season Murray State was just a .500 squad in a major down year for Matt McMahon. Overall this year’s team looks closer to that group than say the great 2018-19 team that won a game in the NCAA Tournament. None of the wins have come against top 150 teams and while Middle Tennessee State isn’t in that category, the Races look like a tough team to trust as a double-digit favorite. Murray State is shooting just 58 percent on free throws this season and turnovers have been a problem for the offense. Two non-division I wins already fill the statistics for Murray State and with a slow pace of play, getting past this spread could be a challenge. The Blue Raiders have some similarities for Murray State with a defense that can force turnovers while also being a successful interior and transition scoring team. Already with more wins than last season, Middle Tennessee State is getting to the line a lot more this year and hitting at a successful clip as well. The Blue Raiders have three veteran starers led by Donovan Sims while two newcomers have had a positive impact so far. There is good depth on this team as the defensive intensity can stay up throughout the game and one of last season’s wins for the Blue Raiders was a 78-61 win over Murray State in Murfreesboro. The spread on that game was only +8 even though at the time most though Murray State would be a strong team. This is the highest spread in this rivalry but several points and the Racers haven’t proven they are quite at that level just yet.
