FREE PICK WEDNESDAY: #718 Fordham +6.5 over Rice 5:00 PM CT

Rice is 4-2 but they don’t have a win in the top 200 this season. After starting this Florida event with a triple-overtime 109-104 win over Evansville, the Owls drew Oakland yesterday and were flat from the start, falling behind quickly and never recovering. Rice does not have a deep rotation and facing a third game in three days now playing as a favorite will be a challenge for a team that struggles defensively. Scott Pera’s team had a 15-13 record last season but went only 6-10 in Conference USA, featuring six wins vs. Division II teams or bottom 20 Division I teams. Fordham isn’t a top 200 team by any stretch but the early returns for new head coach Kyle Neptune has been promising. The Rams beat Akron to start this event and competed well yesterday with a decent Delaware team losing by only 10. Fordham had a 36-18 free throw attempt deficit yesterday, but the Rams have had a strong 3-point defense this season. A former Jay Wright assistant, Neptune has decent returning roster to work with and this group may be underrated and underpriced today, particularly in a three-games-in-three-days setting that may lead to fatigue and lesser shooting all around. Rice is the superior offense here, but the Owls have not had a win by more than five points in the past three games and a group with limited experience will have to follow-up two emotional games with a different style of matchup on Wednesday.
