FREE PICK SUNDAY – Boston -5.5 over Houston

Boston may be 0-2 this season but this should be a great opportunity for the Celtics to get in the win column. The opener at New York was a huge game that went to double overtime as the Celtics played well enough to win despite falling short. The team showed some fatigue in the second half two days later as Toronto pulled away from Boston in the home opener. Ime Udoka has great credentials but this team will likely have some inconsistency early in the season in the adjustment. 25 turnovers against Toronto should get the team’s attention and the shooting numbers are likely to climb upward after Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown combined to go 0-11 from 3-point range in the last game. Houston was the worst team in the NBA last season at 17-55, going only 9-27 at home and there is not a great reason to expect a change of course this year. The roster is among the least formidable in the league and the Rockets have some roster adjustments to acclimate to as well. Houston is 1-1 getting a win over the Thunder on Friday but it was a game where Oklahoma City had very poor shooting results while Houston hit nearly 45 percent from 3-point range. Christian Wood has nearly doubled his career scoring average in the first two games of the season while Jae’Sean Tate is already being asked to play a big role as a rookie. Houston was a more significant underdog in an 18-point loss to Minnesota in the opener as a Boston team that still has tremendous potential is catching a favorable price in this critical opportunity. Boston was -12 in a 16-point win hosting Houston last April and was -10.5 in Houston in March in a 134-107 result and while it seems like there are big changes for both teams this season the valuation adjustment should be minimal.
