FREE PICK SATURDAY #149 SMU -10.5 over Louisiana Tech 2:30 PM CT

Historical context from several seasons ago usually isn’t worth mentioning in college football but this should be a game that has been circled on the SMU schedule for some time. Sonny Dykes used to coach at Louisiana Tech and in the last meeting between these team in the 2017 Frisco Bowl, Dykes had taken over the team just over a week prior to the game and had a short-handed roster to work with. Louisiana Tech took advantage in a blowout result. SMU won by 23 last week despite having four turnovers and while replacing Shane Buechele won’t be easy, Oklahoma transfer Tanner Mordecai has looked the part so far with 11 touchdown throws. The rushing attack for the Mustangs has also been excellent posting 5.7 yards per carry as this should still be one of the top offensive teams in the AAC. After losing by one point in a tough finish against Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech had a bit of a hangover last week, struggling vs. SE Louisiana. Expected to be a tough FCS team this year SE Louisiana went wire-to-wire with the Bulldogs in a 45-42 game with the visitor posting a 598-433 yardage edge. Louisiana Tech’s pass defense will need to be much better to survive this week as while the Bulldogs deserve credit for hanging with a SEC team, the pass defense numbers are among the worst in the nation at this point in the season. Austin Kendall has average numbers leading the offense while the running game has been limited for Louisiana Tech despite the strong scoring numbers. In the high-profile opener the Bulldogs were soundly outgained but had an interception return touchdown and two other scoring drives of just 31 and 38 yards, taking advantage of six Mississippi State turnovers to have a chance at the upset. The Bulldogs had another pick-6 last week to stave off a major upset as they allowed nearly 600 yards to a FCS squad. Being +6 in turnovers on the season is not a sustainable pace and the offense does not look like it will be able to keep pace with SMU without those big breaks.
