Free Pick Sunday: #455 NY Jets +4 over Carolina 12:00 PM CT

The ‘Sam Darnold game’ offers great intrigue as the former Jets quarterback gets a new opportunity in Carolina. Matt Rhule won just five games in his first season leading the Panthers but eight losses came by eight or fewer points. Laying points with this group looks like a risk with only one win by more than seven points last season for Carolina however. Darnold’s track record is among the worst of any current NFL quarterback and while a change of scenery offers him a chance to turn his career around, he isn’t joining a juggernaut that looks ready to make a playoff run. However Wilson’s career turns out, odds are that he is immediately a better option than Darnold and the offensive line should offer some hope for improvement this season, while the skill player options for New York look capable. Wilson was quite sharp in a Jets preseason without a loss for new head coach Robert Saleh who deserves praise for an impressive run leading the San Francisco defense. The Jets aren’t likely to be a consistent group that competes for a playoff spot in a suddenly difficult AFC East, but this is a favorable opening week opportunity given the transition of the Carolina offense and the lack of film on Wilson and how the new Jets offense will look under Mike LaFleur. Ultimately the best of this price is now gone as the Jets stay at just a ‘Free Pick’ level, but there is still a preference for New York at any number above +3 with Week 1 home favorites coming off a season with five or fewer wins being just a 40% ATS proposition since 1980.
