FREE PICK: #339 Ball State +22.5 over Penn State 2:30 PM CT

Penn State delivered a huge win on the road last week at Wisconsin in one of the most anticipated games of the opening weekend. The Nittany Lions didn’t score in the first half and Penn State was soundly beat in most areas of the game with a big exception of a 3-0 edge in turnovers. Wisconsin had a few inconceivable blunders while Penn State had just 50 rushing yards and Sean Clifford mostly struggled outside of a few big plays on broken coverages. Auburn is up next for Penn State as this is a potential flat spot on the schedule. Ball State did not have the most impressive season debut with a modest 31-21 win over FCS Western Illinois but the Cardinals had 216 rushing yards and Drew Plitt is an experienced quarterback for the 2020 MAC champions. Given the stakes in the opener and next week’s national test, Penn State is likely worth fading here having gone 0-3 ATS in the past three tries when favored by 21 or more points. Ball State is 6-2 ATS on the road the past two seasons and played close with NC State early in 2019 for the last similar matchup, losing just 34-23. Favorites of 20 or more coming off a S/U underdog road win are just 23-30-2 ATS since 2014 to support a logical letdown spot.
