FREE PICKS SATURDAY: #189 San Jose State +14 over USC 4:00 PM CT

The last crack at a major conference team for San Jose State came early in the 2019 season with an upset win at Arkansas. The Spartans had a perfect regular season last year before falling bowl action and Brent Brennan should consider this an audition as he should be strongly considered for any prominent opening out West after this season after completing a quick turnaround in San Jose. An early season Pac-12 clash with Stanford is up next for USC as this could be dangerous game for a frequently over-hyped group. The Spartans got a game in last weekend vs. FCS Southern Utah, leading 21-0 after the first quarter and coasting without too much exertion. Nick Starkel did throw for nearly 400 yards in the win as the Spartans didn’t hold back and half of the points allowed came on an interception return touchdown. USC has Pac-12 championship potential and is a national playoff sleeper but having a high-profile quarterback and a perfect regular season record through a weak schedule last year has this group elevated a bit too high against a very formidable foe that will put up points. USC is consistently overvalued to start the season and has gone 2-9 ATS in the season opener since 2010 usually playing in a similar double-digit favorite role and in the past five openers for Clay Helton USC has allowed nearly 31 points per game on average. USC is just 7-12 ATS as a home favorite since 2017 as well.
