Free Pick for Saturday: #951 Cincinnati Reds (Castillo) – over Philadelphia Phillies (Moore) 3:05 PM CT

Luis Castillo has endured a difficult season despite the Reds being a winning team that remains in the playoff hunt. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what has gone wrong for Castillo after being one of the league’s better starters since his rookie season in 2017. After a lot of problems in May, Castillo had settled into a nice groove with a 15-start run posting a 2.59 ERA including a dominant month of July before a catastrophic outing in Cleveland on Monday. His long-term track record suggests that he has a good opportunity to bounce-back with a strong start today and is a much better option than left-hander Matt Moore. Moore looked like a budding superstar as a playoff hero for the Rays as a rookie and he was a Cy Young contender in 2013. Not much has gone well for Moore since through several injuries and now pitching for his fifth different team. His numbers are poor in just over 50 innings with a 6.79 ERA and a 3.9 BB/9 while coming nowhere near his past strikeout potential. Moore is a desperation option for the Phillies right now with Zach Eflin, Chase Anderson, Vince Velasquez, and now Kyle Gibson all battling injuries. Cincinnati took the series opening last night 6-1 with an 8-5 edge in hits and over the past 10 games the Reds are scoring 6.9 runs per nine vs. left-handers while Philadelphia is scoring 3.2 runs per nine vs. right-handers. The Phillies have scored five or fewer runs in seven straight games while the Reds have scored at least six runs in seven of the past 10 games. The bullpen edge in recent weeks is also clearly in favor of Cincinnati and while the Phillies do have a good record at home and a better path to the playoffs, the Reds have great momentum right now and are 47 runs better in scoring differential for the season compared with the Phillies.
