#919 Arizona Diamondbacks (Kelly) +200 over San Diego Padres (Snell) 9:10 PM CT
Several big underdog tickets cashed on opening day and the popular contenders will be overvalued in the opening weeks. No team made a bigger offseason splash than the Padres. Priced well above -200 yesterday San Diego did manage to reach 1-0 but it was a back-and-forth 8-7 result in the opener. Arizona had more hits than San Diego but went just 1-9 with runners in scoring position. San Diego needed more than four innings from five different relievers including substantial pitch counts from Drew Pomeranz and Emilio Pagan. 2018 Cy Young winner Blake Snell is 10-10 the past two seasons and his valuation doesn’t match his results the past two seasons. He now makes his debut for the Padres with some added pressure and in the regular season last year he averaged fewer than five innings per start and not once did he complete six innings. Merril Kelley had a 2.59 ERA last season with a great strikeout-to-walk ratio for Arizona and that included two excellent starts vs. the Padres, allowing just one run and nine hits in nearly 13 innings. There’s no question that the Padres have a much stronger projection this season and could very well wind up as one of the best teams in baseball but 2-to-1 pricing tonight may be a bit high in this contest as the Diamondbacks held their own going 5-5 in this series last season.
