FREE PICK #817 Oklahoma +14.5 over Gonzaga 1:40 PM CT

Gonzaga posted two wins vs. Big XII teams early this season but those wins came by 12 and 5 points respectively. The valuation of the undefeated Bulldogs has rightfully gone up since that time but this line is more than 10 points higher than Gonzaga was favored against Kansas, a Big XII team in which Oklahoma beat and at most should only be valued a few points less than. Gonzaga is a deserving national favorite particularly with some early bracket chaos and the exit of Illinois, but the Round of 32 game may be where this team is most at risk. The tune-up contest vs. Norfolk State isn’t likely beneficial with few meaningful moments in that game and an outrageous 56 percent shooting effort vs. an overmatched squad. Oklahoma meanwhile grinded out a quality win, keeping its composure through some big swings and hitting big shots and free throws down the stretch and building confidence playing without De’Vion Harmon. The Sooners are only 16-10 but the number of quality wins is high, posting five wins vs. teams that were #2 or #3 seeds this season. Eight of 10 losses have come by seven or fewer points and all the prominent wins for Gonzaga out of conference came months ago as this team has been beating up on marginal WCC foes with the top threat a BYU team that was just blown out against an average Pac-12 team in the Round of 64. In five of the last 10 NCAA appearances for Mark Few his team has lost in the Round of 32 including as a #1 seed once as this can be a risky spot for top contenders with a quick turnaround and limited preparation and scouting time for the opponent. Oklahoma doesn’t need to pull off a historic upset to cash in this game they just need to stay respectably close as they have done almost all season through a very tough Big XII path. The Sooners are an elite free throw shooting and an elite 2-point defense as Gonzaga will likely need to rely on 3-point shooting a bit more in this game and Oklahoma has one of the lowest turnover rates in the nation as there won’t be many extra opportunities given to Gonzaga. The last few days have been very upset-driven as nothing should be shocking and the valuation of Gonzaga as the clear top contender may deserve some skepticism at this price.
